After a degree in fine art, Lambert imagined he would become an art teacher, but a chance meeting with an art dealer who hired him as an assistant set him on a different path. Then, after a stint at another dealership, he opened his own gallery in September — Lambert Fine Art — in the British town of Stratford-upon-Avon. Dealing in art is a trade Lambert described as "unusual," because art is often a purchase driven by emotion rather than need. 'The business needs new blood'The world of art dealing can be intimidating to new entrants, according to Olya Johnson, an interior architect and co-founder of art and interiors business Relic, which she set up in 2023. Risks of dealing artThe occupation can also be risky, because dealers often own multiple pieces of art without knowing when they will be sold, according to the dealers CNBC spoke to.

CNN —As accidental adverts for art shows go, a giant pooch made of flowers is a crowd pleaser. Outside the Guggenheim Bilbao in northern Spain, Jeff Koons’ much-loved flower 1992 sculpture “Puppy,” shows how Pop art — that high kick of counter-intuitive artistic expression so often equated with the 1960s — never really went away. The Pop baton has been handed over numerous times in art history. The Guggenheim Museum was pivotal to the development of the movement, both in terms of its fame and its art historical importance. The show features works by many American Pop art A-listers like Roy Lichtenstein (above).

CNN —Fashion writer Patrick Mauriès first met Karl Lagerfeld in 1981, after he quoted the fashion designer in a short book he had written about contemporary fashion and culture. As Lagerfeld became more of a public figure in the 1990s and 2000s, he increasingly sought homes that could act as retreats, said Mauriès. Called “Moon Phases,” they show 62 phases of the moon as seen from Earth, 62 phases visible from other viewpoints in space, and one lunar eclipse. Pace Verso, the NFT wing of Pace, is also offering NFTs of each sculpture, while Koons has produced larger, coinciding physical sculptures of his “Moon Phases” to remain on Earth. Koons' "Moon Phases" is visible on the lander's exterior. Intuitive Machines/APThough its arrival marks a milestone, “Moon Phases” is not the only art to touch down on the moon’s surface. But Odie has closed the chapter on a more niche space race — between Koons and the Dubai-based artist Sacha Jafri.

Tonight, a robotic spacecraft built by a Houston company will try to land safely on the moon. The lunar lander, named Odysseus, is scheduled to touch down at 6:24 p.m. Eastern time. The spacecraft launched on Feb. 15 from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and entered orbit around the moon yesterday. The lander is also carrying 125 miniature moon sculptures made by the artist Jeff Koons. That ice could be used by astronauts who visit the moon in the future for drinking water, oxygen and to even fuel spacecraft.

CNN —Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 lander, also called Odysseus or “Odie,” is on the lunar surface after experiencing unexpected issues hours prior to landing. “Intuitive Machines made the decision to reassign the primary navigation sensors from Odysseus … to use the sensors on NASA’s Navigation Doppler Lidar,” according to the webcast. With its landing legs and sensors pointed toward the lunar terrain, Odysseus relied on the Lidar payload to locate a safe landing spot. The IM-1 mission comes amid a renewed international dash for the lunar surface. Odysseus passes over the near side of the moon following lunar orbit insertion on February 21.

Relying on his ace piloting skills, Armstrong manually navigated to a safe landing site, with only 30 seconds of fuel left. NASAAfter launching early Thursday morning, the Odysseus lunar lander, or “Odie,” is on a historic journey to the moon. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Another private U.S. company took a shot at the moon Thursday, launching a month after a rival’s lunar lander missed its mark and came crashing back. NASA, the main sponsor with experiments on board, is hoping for a successful moon landing next week as it seeks to jumpstart the lunar economy ahead of astronaut missions. SpaceX’s Falcon rocket blasted off in the middle of the night from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, dispatching Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander on its way to the moon, 230,000 miles (370,000 kilometers) away. If all goes well, a touchdown attempt would occur Feb. 22, after a day in lunar orbit. Only five countries — the U.S., Russia, China, India and Japan — have scored a lunar landing and no private business has yet done so.

The imminent launch attempt follows closely on the heels of a separate US lunar landing mission that failed in January. After burning through its fuel, the rocket will detach from Odie, leaving the lunar lander to fly solo through space. Houston-based Intuitive Machines developed the Nova-C moon lander under a NASA initiative. Packed on board the lunar lander are six NASA science and technology payloads. The device is set to pop off of the lunar lander as it approaches the surface and capture images of the vehicle’s descent.

It will amount to “a high-energy fastball pitch towards the moon,” as Intuitive Machines CEO Stephen Altemus put it. Once in Earth’s orbit, the lunar lander will separate from the rocket and begin venturing on its own, using an onboard engine to boost itself on a direct trajectory toward the lunar surface. Founded in 2013, Intuitive Machines will be the second of the CLPS program participants — after Astrobotic — to attempt a moon landing. If all goes according to plan, Odysseus will spend seven days operating on the moon as the lunar lander basks in the sun. Altemus estimates that Intuitive Machines has about an 80% chance of safely landing Odysseus on the moon.

If all goes as planned, Nova-C, built by the private company Intuitive Machines, under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, will touch down on the moon about seven days later, bearing suites of scientific instruments. Peregrine, built by Astrobotic Technology under another Commercial Lunar Payload Services contract, successfully flew into space on Jan. 8, but its mission was cut short because of a fuel leak. It failed to be the first private mission to land on the moon, but Nova-C could succeed — and so could the one after that, and many more. For the first time, the moon will be occupied by private capital, including small startups whose aims transcend science and exploration, launching landers and capsules. The Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, as part of Artemis, encourages private companies to build landers and even rovers that NASA can pay to use, as opposed to the traditional approach of NASA-built equipment.

Koons considered the Balloon Dog’s presence in the film as “truly participating in a larger community where people can rally around it.”

Now, Ethiopian American artist Julie Mehretu, known for her work in abstract painting, has been chosen to create the company’s next Art Car. The first BMW Art Car was painted in 1975 by the American sculptor Alexander Calder after French racing driver Hervé Poulain brought the idea to BMW. The first woman to take on a BMW Art Car was South African artist Esther Mahlangu, who in 1991 painted a 525i sedan. Esther Mahlangu's Art Car featured the bold colors and geometric patterns used in the traditional arts and crafts of the Southern Ndebele people. According to documents viewed by the WSJ, the pair made plans nearly every month for two years. A trove of documents, including emails and schedules, reveal just how friendly the disgraced financier was with Allen, the WSJ reported. The WSJ reported that the reviewed documents show Epstein and Allen planned to get together nearly every month in 2014 and 2015, and also planned to watch movies, visit artist studios, and attend dinners together. A spokeswoman for Allen told the WSJ that Allen never spent time with Epstein without his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, also being present. The spokeswoman told the WSJ that Epstein and Allen "never had a business meeting."
The real predecessor of an art of American consumer culture, with its shiny surfaces and its dirty undersides? It’s Jeff Koons — who also uses obviousness, directness and a proud anti-critical stance in the service of an “accessible” art. A balloon dog sculpture from artist Jeff Koons was accidentally broken at an art festival in Miami. One collector told The Miami Herald and NPR that he is interested in buying the pieces, as its breaking is part of the sculpture's story. Gamson posted pictures and videos of the broken sculpture to his Instagram, capturing the immediate aftermath as the crowd formed and the shattered statue was cleaned up. He can be heard mentioning something about wanting to buy the shattered pieces in one of the videos, and Gamson told NPR this week that he is still interested in buying the pieces. "I find value in it even when it's broken," Gamson told the Herald.
A balloon dog sculpture from artist Jeff Koons was accidentally broken at an art festival in Miami. A woman attending the event allegedly tapped the sculpture, and it fell off its stand. The incident will be forgiven as the work was insured, an art advisor told the Miami Herald. The small glass sculpture, valued at $42,000, was on display during a VIP preview event for Art Wynwood when it was broken Thursday evening, according to the Miami Herald. "I find value in it even when it's broken," Gamson told the Herald.
